Inbreeding
Since how to breed has been a big issue the last few years, we want to tell you about it. All Dandies are related. Because of that, and because we have so few individuals left in the world, we have decided to keep the inbreeding as low as possible in our litters. So, how do we do that? We count the grade of inbreeding in five lines. The Swedish kennelclub has recommended under 6.25 in all breeds. 6.25 is a cousin mating. But since we have very few dandies some of us Swedish breeders have talked about trying to keep it below 4.0 but around 2.5 is what we wish for. Hopefully with a normal quote of puppies born every year, we will produce good and healthy dandies not too closely related. Another thing is to use dogs that mate and give birth normally, since a lot of dandies also have problems with that. We will not produce more than a maximum of two litters of the same combination, so that we have the possibility to keep this low grade of inbreeding in the future. We will have the grade of inbreeding calculated on each of our litters, so that you know how inbred your puppy is. This is to show that this is possible, and for you to hopefully get an healthy dandie. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to contact us. Veronica |
